Unearthing Your True Desires: A Journey of Self-Discovery – Part 1

Inspired by a client’s journey to uncover their true desires, this multi-part series aims to guide you on a similar path.

The secret to finding what you want isn’t hidden. It’s right in front of you, buried under layers of ideas, suggestions, fears, influences, mental distractions, and divided attention. Much like an ancient palace concealed beneath dust and debris, your inner desires have been overshadowed by these forces.

To uncover them, you must become an archeologist of your own mind.

Start digging and see what you discover.

This personal quest was why I sought out a coach. I was tired of my own mental roadblocks, scattered focus, and the constant frustration of lacking a clear purpose or objective in life.

A coach can offer structure and awareness, but the real work happens outside of the sessions. You need to take the initiative to unravel years of conditioning.

Here are some exercises that helped me gain the awareness needed to identify what truly makes me happy. I recommend you try them to connect with memories that hold the key to your answers.

Exercise: Finding Your Passion

Set

  • Find a quiet place and time where you won’t be disturbed.
  • Turn your phone to airplane mode.
  • Have your diary and a pen ready.
  • Bring anything that provides comfort, like a cup of tea or a cushion.

Setting

  • Find Your Calm: Before writing, take a few deep breaths and slowly exhale. Do this as many times as needed.
  • Find Your Joy: Recall a moment that brought you pure joy and a big smile.
Without judgment, hold onto that feeling. Immerse yourself in this joy. Take as long as you need. Once ready, move to the next step.
  • Find Your Passion: On a clean page in your diary, write the following:
What is that one activity I would happily do all night long, just for the joy of it, without expecting any compensation?
Now, imagine all your financial obligations are taken care of. No bills to pay, nothing to worry about.
In this space, write down anything that comes to mind in response to this question.

Side Notes:

  • It’s okay if nothing comes to mind right away.
  • It’s okay if you have many ideas.
  • It is Ok if there are a lot of things to write.

The point of this excercise is to connect with what is there, put it on paper and keep going, until a picture arises.
